The Laboratory of Control Engineering and Digital Systems at the LUT School of Energy Systems is looking for a junior researcher (doctoral student) in data-driven approaches for energy conversion systems.

The laboratory operates under the Department of Electrical Engineering, which has a long history and strong background in the development of electrical drives and their control for special industrial applications. A motivating example of such applications is an electrical drive designed for high-speed industrial use where an electrical machine with an active magnetic bearing (AMB) suspended rotor system is applied instead of traditional solutions. In such applications, data-driven solutions with embedded intelligence are essential for stabilising control solutions, but they also offer possibilities to consider more advanced routines.

What we are looking for

The person appointed for this position will focus on developing intelligent control, diagnostics, and data-driven decision-making for both electromechanical energy conversion and mechatronics applications. The research will focus particularly on complex multidisciplinary systems.  Applicants are expected to have a background in both control and electrical engineering. However, motivated candidates with a strong background in electromechanics or mathematical modelling will be considered for the position too.

The junior researcher must have a master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. electrical engineering, control engineering, mechatronics, or similar) and the ability and motivation to complete the doctoral studies within the normative duration of the studies for the degree (i.e. four years). The employment contract can be concluded only if the candidate obtains the right to pursue postgraduate studies at LUT University.

Employment relationship and pay

The employment relationship is fixed-term with a six-month trial period. The work will start in January 2023 (negotiable) with a one-year term that can be extended for another three years, provided that the studies and research have progressed satisfactorily.

The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 30 800 euros a year (plus a holiday bonus).

Applications

The deadline for applications is 23 October 2022 at midnight, Finnish local time (UTC +3 h).

Please apply by filling out the online form and attaching the following:

  • Your CV
  • Your motivation letter
  • A copy of your academic degree certificate and transcript of records. If the original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish.

Only applications submitted through the university’s online application system will be considered.

Suitable candidates are contacted for an interview.
