Project

Our society relies on machines and engines, and so does life. Molecular motors are widely found in different biosystems, e.g. the famous FoF1 ATP synthase motor that produces the fuel for our cells. Their sophisticated structures and functions established the foundations of the dynamics in the cellular world. The questions ahead for us are: what can we learn from them? Can we build such motors at the nanoscale? The fascinating world of biology has given us positive answers to these questions: we should be able to. With the support of the KU Leuven Special Research Fund (BOF), we are looking for outstanding experimentalists who are interested in and eager to participate in our research to redesign and create these marvellous machines at nanoscales.

For this PhD project, the candidate will take the lead on designing and building the next generation of DNA-based nanoscale motors in lipid bilayers. The candidate will use DNA technology to construct the shapes of the DNA motor, use single-channel electrophysiology tools to control and manipulate these nanoscale artificial motors, and observe their motion and evaluate their performance using single-molecule localisation fluorescence microscopy. Experience in any of the above-mentioned techniques is welcomed, but not required.
Check out our lab on xinshilab.com, and please contact Prof. Xin Shi (xin.shi@kuleuven.be) for more information.

Profile

  • Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics (or equivalent),
  • Enthusiasm for research in a collaborative environment,
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required,
  • Experience in (biological or solid-state) nanopores, DNA technology, single-molecule microscopy, and data analysis and programing is welcomed but not required.

Offer

FLOF funding is available for the entirety of the PhD. Initially, a 1-year contract will be provided, which will be extended in case of a positive evaluation in the first year.
