The mission statement of the CSCE (Center for Sustainable Catalysis and Engineering) is to produce knowledge to foster a better understanding of the role of catalysis in the upcoming circular and carbon-smart economy. CSCE research covers the range of fundamental to applied catalysis research, both in chemistry and engineering.

Responsibilities

Multilayer plastics have been widely used for food packaging and will not be quickly replaced in the coming decades. However, recycling multilayer plastics, in particular the tie layers, is still the most challenging task or in some cases even impossible nowadays. This research aims to establish a performant heterogeneous catalytic system in which recycling of tie layer containing multilayer plastic can be realized via multilayer unzipping and selective dissolution, followed by catalytic decarboxylation of the tie layer/polyolefin fraction, with maximum recovery of all polymers that can be again processed towards the same multilayer material.

For this particular vacancy, we're looking for a motivated and independent postdoctoral researcher highly interested in the development of the novel reactor design, separation technologies as well as the reprocessing (extrusion) of the multilayers.

Profile

- PhD degree in Chemical Engineering or related fields by the start of the postdoc position; postdoc seniority of 0-3 years;
- Solid and proven expertise in reactor design is required as well as good understanding of downstream separation technology. Background in plastic recycling technologies is a plus.
- Ability to work independently, and to report progress in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Fluent English, both spoken and written.

Offer

  • - Full-time PD position for one year (with possibility of extension), tax-free postdoctoral fellowship.
  • - The opportunity to work and live in one of the most innovative universities and cities in Europe (https://www.kuleuven.be/english/why-choose-kuleuven?project=TL&pagina=Home&thema=About-kuleuven&onderwerp=Why-choose )
  • - International working environment and possibility to present your work at international conferences.
  • - A state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure.

Interested?

Candidates can apply by submitting their CV, motivation letter via the online application tool.
Please also include when you would be available to start, and the names and contact details of at least two relevant references (preferably senior researchers) that are willing to write a letter of recommendation upon request.
