The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of KU Leuven, Belgium, invites applications for an academic position “Qualitative Methodology”. This position is located in the Methodology of Educational Sciences research group of the research unit on Methods, Individual and Cultural Differences, Affect and Social Behaviour.

Duties

Research

It is expected from applicants that they conduct innovative research by using qualitative research methods and that they contribute to research about qualitative research methodology and about the use of qualitative research methods and techniques in psychology and educational sciences. In this context, candidates may develop their own research program and connect to methodological or content-related research of other members of the faculty or the university. The candidate should be willing to engage in attracting competitive research funding. The successful candidate is expected to establish an international competitive research program, to supervise PhD students, and to deliver research output at a high international level.

Teaching

The teaching assignment will mainly include courses with regard to qualitative research methodology, within the BA and MSc programs of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences in Leuven and Kortrijk. Most of these courses are taught in Dutch. The applicant will also be required to supervise MSc theses. In line with KU Leuven regulations, the applicant will be required to learn Dutch within three years after being appointed. Actual teaching assignments will be mutually agreed upon between the applicant, the coordinator of the research unit, the Program Directors of the BA/MSc programs, the Vice-Dean for Education and the Dean of the Faculty.

Service

The candidate is expected to take up administrative and policy responsibilities within the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. Methodological expertise is expected to be shared with other research groups, for instance by methodological consultancy, by the organization of workshops and courses, or by participating in peer review and in scientific panels.

Profile

  • The position requires a PhD degree. The candidate’s research should demonstrate experience and expertise in the domain of qualitative research methodology. The conducted studies and the methods used should be relevant and translatable to psychology and educational sciences.
  • Candidates are expected to have excellent research potential, as evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals that demonstrate expertise in the use of qualitative research methods and techniques, in designing qualitative studies, or in the epistemology of qualitative research.
  • Candidates are expected to have a broad interest in and knowledge of different qualitative research types.
  • International research experience is highly appreciated.
  • Applicants are expected to have high-level instructional qualities and skills necessary to train and teach future bachelors and masters in psychology and educational sciences. 
  • The successful candidate should be prepared to develop these qualities and skills further.
  • The applicant is also expected to have the necessary relational skills and leadership capacities to collaborate with colleagues and to build international networks.
  • A good command of English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English.
  • Proficiency in Dutch at the start of the appointment is recommended, given that the teaching assignment requires that the candidate can be quickly involved in teaching and given the importance of language and interpretation in qualitative research. The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If the candidate knows little or no Dutch at the employment start, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable participation in board meetings. Within five years of the date of appointment, the candidate is expected to have achieved CEFR level C1 in order to be able to teach in Dutch.

Offer

We are offering full-time employment in a dynamic and internationally oriented research environment. Depending on the candidate’s record and qualifications, she/he will be appointed at one of the academic staff grades. Candidates who have recently obtained their PhD are recruited as assistant professor in a tenure track position with evaluation after 5 years. In case of positive evaluation after 5 years, the candidate will then be appointed to the rank of associate professor. In Belgium, assistant professors are allowed to be main supervisor of a PhD and can autonomously apply as principal investigator for research grants. KU Leuven is offering financial resources to new professors to start up their own research lines. They can also apply for own project funding.
