DistriNet is an international research group with extensive expertise in secure & distributed software. Embedded in the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven, Group Science, Engineering and Technology, DistriNet brings together a substantial critical mass of over 100 researchers, including 16 full-time professors, 10 permanent research staff members, 14 postdoctoral researchers, and about 80 PhD researchers. The conducted research is systems-centric, always application-driven and often performed in close collaboration with industry. The know-how of DistriNet formed the basis of multiple spin-off companies (https://distrinet.cs.kuleuven.be/spinoffs/). The dominant expertise of DistriNet focuses on Secure Software, covering applications, services, middleware and systems, infrastructures, methods and tools.

Within DistriNet, a team of researchers is dedicated to privacy-by-design (and regulatory compliance). They actively work on challenges related to privacy impact and risk assessment, privacy-by-design and its role in the software development life cycle, active approaches to anonymize or de-identify data, the creation and enforcement of privacy policies, etc. The research findings are applied in case studies in innovative and challenging application domains, including e-health, industry 4.0, e-finance, e-media and e-government.

Responsibilities

The research expert Privacy Engineering will further extend DistriNet’ s research at an international level, covering privacy assessment and management, and mitigation of privacy risks. 
This includes the following responsibilities: 
  • You initiate, attain and coordinate research project ideas.  This includes knowledge acquisition of relevant national and international research programs, participation in project idea initiatives, negotiations with partners and defining project plans.
  • You stimulate and drive the creation of new development and assessment methods and techniques
  • By attending and organizing workshops and stakeholder meetings you expand DistriNet’ s national and international network in research, industry and government.
  • You follow and assess relevant internal and external developments within the research domain of privacy engineering; you cover a broad range of research topics directly coupled to challenges in data protection and technical aspects of privacy solutions.
  • You compare internal research results with those of other research centers. 
  • You contribute to the development of the research strategy related to Privacy Engineering within the DistriNet research group.

Profile

* Ph.D. in Computer Science (Doctor in Engineering or in Sciences: Informatics, Computer Science), or equivalent based on experience.
* Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following research subdomains of Privacy Engineering:
  • privacy impact and risk assessment,
  • privacy-by-design and its role in the software development life cycle, 
  • active approaches to anonymize or de-identify data,
  • the creation and enforcement of privacy policies,  
  • best practices in SDLC (Secure Development Life Cycle)
  • privacy threat modeling and mitigation techniques
  • ...
* Experience in the management of research projects. Experience in the definition and coordination of research programs and proposals.
* Experience in the creation and evaluation of Software Engineering tools and methods.
* Affinity with the national and international industrial ICT community.
* The ability to work independently as well as part of a research organization.
* The ability to coach people and to collaborate in a peer-2-peer fashion.
* Fluent in English, both written and oral.
