In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven, Faculty of Engineering Science, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), research unit WaveCoRE there is a full-time academic vacancy (tenure track) in the area of Multiscale Electrodynamics on campus Arenberg in Heverlee (Leuven). We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent interdisciplinary research record and with educational competence within the area of Electromagnetic Waves and Fields. The research group WaveCoRE is embedded within the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering Science, which in past years have systematically been given a high ranking for research and education quality by independent accreditation committees, and which have an extensive national and international network, both in the academic and business world. The research group can build upon a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network, connections with companies and non-profit organisations, a stable offer of highly talented PhD students and a supportive work environment.

The current explosion in nano-, quantum-, cyber- and bio- science and technology augurs the greatest industrial and social transformations in the history of mankind. Electrodynamics, as the discipline subtended by one of the four forces of the universe, will doubtlessly play a major role in this transformation. However, this will require a progressive evolution towards a “multiscale” perspective that shall be restricted neither to the macroscopic scale, considered in today’s electromagnetics engineering, nor to the microscopic scale, underpinning particle physics. This evolution will rather combine these extreme scales, across a possible continuum of different scales, with different effects occurring at different scales and cooperating in the overall properties of the future systems. 

The resulting paradigm of “multiscale electrodynamics” will include the study and development of novel materials (e.g., involving meta-, 2D, phase-transition, topological, bio/neuro-electronic materials), novel multiphysics (e.g., integrating magnetic, plasmonic, phononic, acoustics, thermodynamic, quantum, organic and bio phenomena) and novel technologies (e.g., including ultrafast optics, spin/valley-tronics, quantum sensing and processing and optogenetics). 

We are looking for candidates with potential to play a disruptive role in this global area of multiscale electrodynamics research. Such candidates should have a solid background with convincing track record in computational physics, classical and quantum electrodynamics.

  • You strengthen existing research lines and provide complementary expertise to the research group, setting up collaborations within and outside of the department.
  • You develop an interdisciplinary research program with several new research lines centered around your own field: multiscale electrodynamics.
  • You establish an international cooperation network.
  • You are capable of acquiring competitive funding.
  • You publish at the highest scientific level, acquire resources for fundamental and applied research, and supervise PhDs at an international level.
  • You give the necessary attention to the valorisation of the research and to further applied research with companies.


  • You ensure high-quality education within the general area of electromagnetic fields and waves, with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty/university through the supervision of master theses and as a promoter of PhD students.
  • You develop your teachings in accordance with KU Leuven’s vision on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for the educationalist professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.
  • Your teaching task is determined in consultation and based on your specific profile. The scope of this is limited in the first years of your appointment. In your further career, the faculty pays a great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.


  • You are prepared to provide scientific, social and internal services.
  • You are willing to perform science-oriented and applied research projects in collaboration with industry and government.
  • You are actively involved in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Science and the different education program in the domain of electrical engineering to future students and participate in information and public relations activities of the faculty.
  • You provide advice and support for research projects in collaboration with the researchers and the PhD students of the various research groups within the department.


  • You have a PhD in Electrical Engineering, or a similarly qualified degree, with strong link to the areas of Electromagnetic Waves and Fields and computational physics.
  • International experience is an important advantage.
  • You have a strong research profile. The quality of your research is evidenced by publications in leading international journals and conferences.
  • You have demonstrable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
  • You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership capacities that are relevant within a university context.
  • Proficiency in English is required. KU Leuven provides courses in academic English if such appears necessary.
  • The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in meetings and to acquire the level of Dutch that is required for tenure.
  • Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, resp. English to the required level.


We are offering full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment. You will work in Heverlee, part of Leuven, a historic, dynamic and lively city located in the heart of Belgium, within 20 minutes from Brussels, the capital of the European Union, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam.

You will be appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and following a positive evaluation, you will be permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.

KU Leuven is well set to welcome foreign professors and their family and provides practical support with regard to immigration & administration, housing, childcare, learning Dutch, partner career coaching, etc. 

To facilitate scientific onboarding and accelerate research in the first phase a starting grant of 100.000 euro is offered to new professors without substantial other funding, appointed for at least 50%."
