Job description

The RE will work on visual fine-grained classification. In particular they will compare image representations extracted from neural networks trained generatively to those trained discriminately via classification or self-supervised learning for this task. The particular focus will be on plankton species identification with the goal to improve classification and to ultimately identify of novel species with active learning. You will join a joint project between the groups of Josephine Sullivan at RPL, Prof Anders Andersson at the CBH school and Bengt Karlson at SMHI. You will develop your skills and knowledge in these areas:

1) Learn about modern image generation techniques

2) Conduct experiments on a GPU clusters

3) Review and critically analyze recent research in fine-grained classification

It is hoped the completed work will result in a published paper at either a computer vision conference or workshop. There is also the possibility to redefine the project to focus on active learning.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A graduate degree or an advanced level (higher education) in the research subject or equivalent competence. 
  • Experience with PyTorch (or similar deep learning software package) and training of
    standard deep learning architectures for non-trivial image datasets
  • Knowledge of modern deep learning techniques
  • You are good at working independently and collaborating with others

Preferred qualifications

  • Awareness of diversity and equality issues, with a particular focus on gender equality

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
