Project description

Third-cycle subject: Architecture

In this project, you will develop spatial analysis and mapping as knowledge challenges from a critical cartography and mapping perspective – how can analyses be used to elucidate hidden or overlooked groups, species, life patterns, structures, or aspects – and an architectural spatial analysis perspective – how can analytical precision be increased concerning the field of architecture. Developing theories and practices to critically and productively contribute to one another, and knowledge about the interaction between architecture, urban design, and society, is central.

Spatial analysis has the capacity to map, demonstrate, and discover qualities and conditions central to planning and design. It also has strength in analyzing power structures, social organization of relations, and other societal conditions where architecture and urban design take an active part in structuring conditions and possibilities for individual life patterns, relations between individuals and groups, and other societal processes.

You are expected to work theoretically as well as practically by gathering and processing data and perform spatial analysis in order to deepen the understanding of how a critical morphological perspective can contribute to a future sustainable society. This includes relations between research questions, societal challenges, and different kinds of data, spatial models, and analyses. You are expected to anchor your work in contemporary architectural discourse as well as in the further development of concrete architectural analytic models.

Supervision: Daniel Koch is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
