Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, 65 PhD students and 35 postdocs.

Division

The Brain, Body, and Self Laboratory (Group Ehrsson) uses neuroimaging and behavioral methods to investigate how we perceive our bodies as coherent entities, distinct from the external environment and fundamentally tied to the sense of self (www.ehrssonlab.se). Our goal is to elucidate the perceptual rules and neural mechanisms by which the brain integrates signals from various sensory modalities (e.g., vision, touch, proprioception) and perceptual memories to construct a central representation of the body.

We also explore how this core body representation influences cognition, emotions, and memory, shaping our self-perception and perception of the external world (embodied cognition), and how it forms the basis for conscious self-awareness.

Our laboratory specializes in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), psychophysics, computational modeling, and advanced behavioral approaches, including virtual reality and robotically controlled bodily illusion setups. Our researchers have local access to state-of-the-art imaging facilities, including two 3T MRI scanners, a 7T MRI scanner, and a MEG scanner.

Duties

We are seeking a highly talented, innovative, and enthusiastic researcher with a Ph.D. in psychological science, cognitive neuroscience, imaging neurosciece, or a related field, awarded within the past two years. The successful candidate will contribute to a project focused on body representation, bodily illusions, multisensory integration, embodied cognition, or processes related to bodily self-awareness, including the sense of body ownership.

The ideal candidate should have expertise in experimental psychology or cognitive imaging neuroscience, with a preference for skills in psychophysics and computational modeling and/or proficiency in neuroimaging methods (e.g., multivoxel pattern analysis). Experience with human electrophysiology (EEG, MEG) or brain stimulation techniques(e.g., TMS) is also highly desirable. The candidate will work within the framework of our research program (www.ehrssonlab.se) but will have substantial freedom to develop their own project based on their ideas, aligned with the scholarship program's goals of fostering career development and international experience.

The ability to work independently, initiate and lead innovative research projects from conception and design through to the preparation of high-quality article drafts is essential. Applicants must demonstrate an excellent academic track record, including high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals.

Entry requirements

Postdoctoral scholarships may be established for foreign researchers who pursue their merit in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
