Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – The Research University in the Helmholtz Association creates and imparts knowledge for the society and the environment. It is our goal to make significant contributions to mastering the global challenges of mankind in the fields of energy, mobility, and information. For this, about 9.800 employees of KIT cooperate in a broad range of disciplines in research, academic education, and innovation.

Join the Department of Biophotonics, as we are looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

at the interface of Biology, Bioengineering and Optical High Throughput Screening

This role is integral to our ERC-funded project 'Genetically enhanced, optically superior tissues' (GHOSTs) and is available immediately until 31.05.2025.

Background: If all biological tissue were transparent, optical microscopes could observe the wonders of cellular life deep within their native context. We have recently made significant strides in improving the optical properties of mammalian cells via directed evolution. Our next objective is to extend these advancements to enhance imaging within optically cleared living tissues.

The selected candidate will be instrumental in advancing our initiative, tasked with identifying molecular pathways that modulate tissue optics. This objective will be pursued through the development and execution of systematic screening processes, augmented by robotic sample management and advanced automated microscopy techniques.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the pioneering project to discover molecular pathways that enhance optical properties in living tissues.
  • Design and perform systematic screens, employing state-of-the-art robotic sample handling and automated microscopy.
  • Collaborate with our dynamic research team to publish findings in top-tier international journals.
  • Contribute to the drafting of compelling research proposals.
  • Mentor junior researchers, promoting a culture of collaborative learning an professional development.

Personal qualification

  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Screening, Biology, Biophysics or a closely related field
  • A proactive 'can-do' mindset, enthusiasm for teamwork and eagerness to thrive in an interdisciplinary research setting
  • Proven experience in any of the following areas: mammalian cell culture, directed evolution, compound screening, image and data analysis, tissue culture, genome engineering or light microscopy.
  • Strong mathematical, data analysis and processing skills
  • Exceptional proficiency in written and spoken English
  • A substantial track of publications in peer-reviewed journals
