Do you have a passion for uncovering the biophysical and biochemical workings of living cells? Join the Jenkins Graduate Program at Johns Hopkins University for a doctorate degree in biophysics.

We have an outstanding community of students, postdocs, and faculty, making exciting discoveries in cell motility, membrane protein biophysics, cellular compartmentalization and self-assembly, protein thermodynamics, protein evolution and chemistry, RNA biology, and targeting and dynamics of protein-DNA machinery.

The Jenkins Biophysics Program has a rigorous and stimulating program that develops and strengthens each student’s foundation in biophysics. During their first year, students take a thermodynamics and kinetics course, a course in the fundamentals of macromolecular structure/function, and a series of shorter modules in different biophysical techniques – programming in python, statistics and data analysis, solution biophysics, NMR, single molecule, X-ray crystallography/cryo-EM, and molecular dynamics. In their second year, students take two workshops – proposal writing and research presentations. Following the research presentation workshop, in the third year students give a public talk on their thesis project. Starting in the third year, students also present their work and future plans to a thesis review committee, designed to offer advice in research and professional development.

In the Jenkins Program, students join a research group after doing rotations during their first year. Students are expected to complete their thesis work and obtain a PhD in six years or less.

Jenkins students are fully supported by a competitive stipend, and tuition is paid either by the program or the thesis lab. For the first two years, students are required to be teaching assistants.

Applicants to the Jenkins Program should have a undergraduate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or related field. A Master’s degree is not required. We have a diverse group of students from around the world (https://biophysics.jhu.edu/graduate/jenkins-biophysics-program/people/). International students are encouraged to apply.

Interview process:

All applications are reviewed by early December. For those with complete and compelling applications, we will send an email to set up a zoom interview for either late December or January. We normally made admission decisions soon after the interview.

Material required for an application:

  • a transcript of coursework and grades from the undergraduate institution. If from an institution outside the United States, transcripts must be submitted through one of these services:
  • Three letters of recommendation. These letters should describe past academic achievements and research experience, as well as drive and intellectual potential for carrying out independent research as a graduate student.
  • A statement of purpose. The candidates should describe what motivates them to pursue a PhD in biophysics. What scientific areas are of particular interest, and what background or training is relevant for appreciating the candidate’s strengths?
  • For candidates whose native language is not English, a demonstration of proficiency in English speaking, writing, and comprehension. Results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations should be directly sent to the Graduate Admissions and Enrollment Office.
    • For IELTS, Institution Name: Johns Hopkins University, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences; Country: USA; All IELTS testing centers should be able to send scores electronically. For more information, please visit ielts.org.
    • For TOEFL, use Institution Code: 5332. For more information, please visit ets.org/toefl/.
