In the rapidly changing environment of the 21st century, there is an increasing need to forge bridges across disciplines to address emerging challenges and problems. Through its commitment to academic excellence, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has developed world-class strengths in many subjects over its short 30-year history.  With a strong track record of cultivating high end talents and nurturing future leaders for academia and industry, HKUST is well positioned to craft an innovative approach to cross-disciplinary education and research in its new state-of-the-art Guangzhou campus, HKUST(GZ), meeting the needs of an ever-evolving world.

HKUST is a leading international university ranked 1st by Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2020 and 27th by QS World University Rankings 2021. The Guangzhou campus synergizes with and maintains the same academic standard as the Clear Water Bay campus. The Internet of Things (IoT) Thrust is an academic department in the Guangzhou campus and adopts an inter-disciplinary pedagogy to prepare students with integrated knowledge to pursue new innovations and to explore new research frontiers in forming IoT-enabled future smart cities and the digital society.

The IoT Thrust has multiple tenured/tenure-track positions at the ranks of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. The IoT Thrust is interested in candidates who can create a multi-disciplinary IoT curriculum and pursue high impact research in a science, technology and engineering oriented environment. We offer a dynamic and collaborative academic environment within the culturally rich city of Guangzhou. Our faculty is highly diverse, joining us from world-leading institutes around the globe.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. degree and work in one or more areas related to the Thrust. Example research topics include sensors, embedded systems, data science, machine learning, optimization, computer networking, distributed computation and systems, security and privacy-enhancing technologies, human-factors in design, metaverse technologies, and next-generation applications. As a highly internationalized campus, English is the medium of instruction at HKUST(GZ) - candidates should therefore have a good command of written and spoken English.

  • Applicants for tenure-track Assistant Professor should demonstrate strong research and teaching potentials.
  • Applicants for Associate Professor should have a proven record in research, teaching, student supervision, and funding.
  • Applicants for Professor should have world-class academic achievements, international academic leadership, and an established track record in teaching, student supervision and funding.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service

Salary is as competitive, if not more competitive, than top US and European institutes. New appointees will be given extremely generous startup funds to support their independent research. This will include funding for multiple PhD students, post-docs, equipment, travel, and lab space. Our startup funds are significantly more generous than most US and European institutes, with ample opportunities to attract further support for your independent research.

All posts are Mainland China appointments to be offered by the HKUST Mainland entity in accordance with the local employment laws and regulations. Appointments to Professor and some Associate Professor will be made on substantive basis. The new campus mirrors the HK campus tenure-track model, where Assistant Professor appointments will be made on an initial fixed-term contract of up to three years with the option for renewal.
