The Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics is responsible for high-quality education and research from laboratory to clinic and back, in order to provide innovative and patient-oriented care over the entire life course. This vacancy will strengthen the medical research and education at the department.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 80% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation in the field of colorectal cancer (CRC), more specifically on host-microbiota interactions during development, progression and therapy of colorectal cancer.
  • You will conduct your research in the laboratory ‘Host-Microbiota-Interaction lab’ (HMI), headed by prof. Lars Vereecke, of the Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The HMI lab and the germ-free mouse facility are located at MRBII (UZ hospital campus). Some Research activities will take place at the VIB-Center for Inflammation Research (IRC), Zwijnaarde.
  • You will unravel complex host-microbe interactions that contribute to colorectal cancer development and therapy response, using transgenic mouse models, organoid cultures and germ-free mouse technology.
  • You will collaborate with other researchers inside and outside the department working on colorectal cancer, and will work in close contact with our clinical partner, prof. Karen Geboes, digestive oncologist at UZ Gent.
  • You will assist in the teaching activities at the department, specifically the courses in the domain of Cell Biology.
  • You will assist in the internal and external services of the department.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a degree of Master in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology & Biochemistry, or similar. The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
  • For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
  • You obtained excellent grades during your Master studies.
  • You are passionate about academic research.
  • You have an independent, problem-solving, organized and result-oriented attitude.
  • You obtained a Felasa-C degree for experimental animal research and are able to work independently with experimental animals.
  • You have excellent didactic and communication skills.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a temporary appointment of 2 years. A second and third appointment of up to 2 years can follow, subject to a favourable evaluation of the first term.
  • Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education.
  • Your appointment will start on 1 December 2024 at the earliest
