It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. YOUR TASKS

The Department of Translation, Interpreting, and Communication at Ghent University is looking for scientific staff, to be employed within a term of 18 months (12 months for postdoctoral researchers) and work in the field of psycholinguistics, conducting research on verbal and non-verbal communication in bilinguals and deception. An initial study will scrutinise the behaviour of bilinguals when engaging in (emotional and non-emotional) conversations in both languages. Specifically, it will, among others, look at hand gestures, body posture, facial (micro)expressions, and other non-verbal language. At the same time, verbal language, such as vocabulary, sentence structure, voice timbre, and rate of speech, will also be analysed. Secondly, these features will be compared with characteristics of deception. A subsequent study will look at whether bilinguals exhibit the same verbal and non-verbal behaviour when trying to deceive in their first and second language.

Specific tasks:

  • You will conduct research and write a number of articles within an 18-month period, as well as a project proposal that can be submitted for funding.
  • You will share (interim) results through contributions to books and lectures at conferences.
  • You will contribute to initiatives that open up the research field to a wider audience.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a Master's degree in a field relevant to the research described (e.g. Communication, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Psychology, Pedagogy, Criminology).
  • We also welcome postdocoral applications, but the appointment term will have to be reduced to 12 months.
  • You are/were an industrious student with academic qualities, as evidenced by your study results, your Master's thesis and any other publications.
  • You are willing to expand the research project and submit a funding application (e.g. to FWO).
  • You have some affinity with the research topic.
  • You have a good command of Dutch and English.
  • You are organised and meticulous.
  • You are able to work autonomously, but can also report systematically to your supervisors.
  • You have a basic knowledge of statistics, speech analysis, and behaviour analysis, or are prepared to acquire these skills within a short term.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for an 18-month period for predoctoral researchers and a 12-month period for postdoctoral researchers.
  • If funding is obtained, this contract of definite duration can turn into a full PhD (four years) or a continuation of the postdoctoral term.
  • Your contract will start on 1/09/2023 at the earliest.
  • Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master’s degree) or salary scale PD1 to PD4 (if you hold a doctorate).  Click here for more information about our salary scales.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.
