Job description

Printed opto-electronics based on solution processable colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) can make available a much-needed small footprint, low cost and flexible platform for optical sensing, imaging and spectroscopy in the technologically relevant short and mid-wave infrared (IR) spectrum (1.5 μm – 5 μm). However, while this revolution took place in the visible spectrum, and is happening at the side of detection for infrared light, QD-based IR light source technology is currently expensive, lacking performance and is based on colloidal nanomaterials made of restricted chemical elements.

We will therefore explore a route towards ‘printable IR opto-electronics’ by investing in three interconnected scientific domains: chemistry, photo-physics and integrated photonics. In particular, your job will be to develop a new class of solution-processable semiconductors in the form of colloidal QDs based on non-restricted elements with efficient infrared light emission.

You will be part of a team of 6 people in total, including physicists and engineers, working to the same end goal of low-cost infrared opto-electronics. More in detail, we will first extend the bottom-up chemical synthesis of tuneable III-V In(As,Sb,P) QDs to larger sizes, implement core/shell growth procedures and explore routes to n-dope them to explore intra-band transitions.

Job profile

You will work on expanding the size range of III-V colloidal quantum dots and developing doping strategies to realize n-type III-V QDs. A strong background in nano-materials chemistry is recommended.

  • Experience with colloidal synthesis and characterization methods is an asset.
  • A good knowledge of English (oral and written) is a must.
  • You work independently, have a strong feeling of responsibility and can commit to timing and milestones set forward by the project.

How to apply

Send your application (see below) to Pieter.geiregat@ugent.be with the heading “Application NOMISS_Last name_First name”

For the application itself:

  • Check the requirements and job descriptions thoroughly, only relevant profiles will be contacted for an interview !
  • Provide a clear CV & Bsc/MSc transcripts with grading.
  • If you have publications, please highlight and explain your role in those projects.
  • A motivation letter related to this project and your desired position, and why you are interested a PhD in general.
  • Master thesis , or excerpt.
  • 2 relevant references (both professorial academic and non-academic are allowed) that can be contacted.

Application Deadline = May 1st 2023.
Short-listed applicants will be contacted for interview sessions shortly after.
