Imagine a job advertisement that looks for flexible and reliable employees. Would ethnic minority job seekers feel as much attracted to this job as their majority counterparts?
The Vocational and Personnel Psychology Lab (VoPP) at the Department of Work, Organization and Society has an exciting job opening for a PhD-student in the project “Mind the Ad: Why Qualified Ethnic Minority Job Seekers May (Not) Apply”. This project investigates how job openings may stimulate or refrain qualified ethnic minority job seekers to apply for jobs. Several experimental studies (using eye-tracking in the lab vs. surveys in the field) will advance our theoretical understanding of the cognitive-motivational processes of applicants’ self-selection and may guide practitioners how to better match labor demand-supply and increase ethnic diversity in the workplace.
Your main task as a PhD-student is to conduct research, which implies being responsible for preparing, performing, and evaluating the studies described in the research proposal. However, as a PhD-student, we encourage you to also set-up new studies relevant to this project and/or modify current designs based on good insights. The research will result in a doctoral thesis, consisting of peer-reviewed articles that will be published in high-quality journals. This position consists of research activities with only a minimal (about 5% to 10%) of teaching duties.
As a new doctoral student enrolled at Ghent University, you will also become a member of the Doctoral School of Social and Behavioral Sciences that offers specialized courses within your discipline.
The PhD-project is subsidized by FWO (Fonds Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek - Vlaanderen) and will be executed at the VoPP/PP09 – Department of Work, Organization and Society in close collaboration with the PP02 - Department of Experimental Psychology at Ghent University and the PP07 – Department of Developmental, Personality and Social Psychology at Ghent University. Research coaching is provided by Prof. Dr. Eva Derous (Promotor), Prof. Dr. Wouter Duyck and Prof. Dr. Filip De Fruyt (Co-Promotors).
The PhD-student will be appointed for a period of 4 years from November 1, 2022 on (starting date to negotiate).
About the departments:
The Department of Work, Organization and Society (PP09) consists of a team of 40 researchers that is still expanding. The Vocational and Personnel Psychology (VoPP) lab is one of its research groups that aims to investigate vocational and personnel psychological themes ranging from vocational interests and choice over recruitment and selection issues, to training and career guidance / coaching. Topics investigated address the growing demands for evidence-based advice on various career and personnel-related issues in vocational and work-related settings. The VoPP / PP09 has a strong publication record, good international contacts, and an excellent reputation in both the academic and applied fields of work. This PhD-project will be executed in close collaboration with the Department of Experimental Psychology (PP02), and the Department of Developmental, Personality and Social Psychology (PP07), grouping over 50 researchers each, who study different aspects of human cognition, personality and social behavior. These two departments have state-of-the-art research facilities and a very strong publication record in both basic and applied behavioral research.
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with strong interests in personnel selection (recruitment), social and personality psychology (stigmatization; stereotypes) and experimental psychology (research methodology like eye tracking). Last year Master students can also apply, conditional on successful completion of their Master’s program in September 2022 (latest).
Extra requirements/expected qualifications:
To apply, send a CV, transcripts of BSc and MSc courses and grades, copies of educational certificates and letters of contact information of two referees, plus a motivation letter as a single pdf to Prof. Eva Derous (Eva.Derous@UGent.be).
For further information on the project plan or details about the position, please also contact Prof. Eva Derous.
The closing date is October 12, 2022. Interviews are expected to take place in the third and fourth week of October 2022.
