Topic research: Precision medicine for rare hereditary and acquired diseases.
Rare hereditary diseases cause a substantial medical, financial and psychosocial burden for patients and their families. Despite advanced genome analysis, patients suffering from these diseases can remain without a diagnosis or tailored therapy. Worldwide there is an increase of acquired diseases (cancer). Recent statistics show that 40% of males and females will develop cancer over the course of their life. It is therefore crucial to invest in prevention and early detection of cancer, apart from the development of new and improved treatments.
This mandate will be oriented toward fundamental and translational research on precision medicine for rare hereditary and acquired diseases. It will be focused on (1) integrated omics (genome-, transcriptome-, epigenome- and proteome profiling) and functional genomics to elucidate hidden genetic variation in these conditions; (2) disease modeling in cellular (stem cell) models derived from patients, to allow multi-omics on biologically relevant material on the one hand, and to study the pathogenesis of these diseases on the other hand; (3) innovative therapies for these conditions. This research will be integrated in excellence research of GE31 groups and will create new opportunities for precision medicine of rare hereditary and acquired diseases.
