Description of the research activity:
Disadvantaged peri-urban and rural areas are facing multifaceted challenges, such as lack of proximity services, social infrastructures, contemporary cultural and economic activities, going along with megatrends such as demographic change, urbanisation, rural exodus, immigration, and climate change. But vacancy, abandoned and underused spaces also offer opportunities. As well, traditional and situated knowledge can unfold potentials if combined with contemporary culture and technologies. The project aims at untapping potentials through action research, participatory design and visual storytelling. It leverages the interplay of grassroots initiatives (commoning) with institutions (institutioning) and cooperatives (social entrepreneurship) to create solidary and sustainable social practices and economies. It intersects with multiple other areas, such as spatial planning, community development and policy design, and involves new institutional arrangements and commons-public partnerships.
The Free University of Bozen/Bolzano was founded on 31 October 1997 as a multilingual, internationally oriented institution.
