The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts its own research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

The following permanent position is now available in the “Food and Feed Additives” unit in the Food Chain Safety department at the BfR:

Scientific officer for the assessment of substances/contaminants in feed (f/m/x)

Reference number: 3404 | Pay grade 13 TVöD | Place of work: Berlin | Application period: 06.12.2023

Part-time employment is possible. Subject to an appropriate period of probation this position enables promotion up to pay grade 14 TVöD.

Tasks:

  • Scientific assessment of health risks for humans and animals posed by the occurrence of undesirable substances/contaminants in feed 
  • Participation in drafting opinions to advise the Federal Government and the European Commission on questions of feed safety
  • Performance of animal studies on the transfer of (un)desirable substances from feed to food of animal origin, also applying the “3R” principle
  • Collaboration in the management and organisation of the BfR Committee for Feed and Animal Nutrition
  • Support in identifying research needs as well as acquisition and implementation of research projects on questions of feed safety
  • Preparation of assessment reports and publications in German and English

Your profile:

  • University degree (master’s, diploma or a comparable university degree) in agricultural science, nutritional science, veterinary medicine or a similar field of study
  • Knowledge of animal nutrition and nutritional physiology of livestock animals 
  • Research experience (publication of own research results and ideally the successful acquisition of third-party funds) and professional experience in the field of feed science and animal nutrition 
  • Openness to interdisciplinary cooperation 
  • Very good spoken and written knowledge of German and English 
  • Good computer skills and a conscientious way of working, flexibility, the ability to work in a team and resilience as well as the willingness to travel on business are required
