Research Software Engineer for Computational Mass Spectrometry

The Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) is a joint state-of-the-art research and training facility of the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. With the latest technologies and key expertise for omics research, the FGCZ provides research services and project support to the Zurich life science research community.

We are looking for a Research Software Engineer at Functional Genomics Center Zurich as soon as possible or upon agreement.

Project background

The FGCZ Computational Mass Spectrometry Group supports researchers in analyzing and interpreting mass spectrometry-related data. The team covers raw data processing, high-performance computing, statistical evaluation, interpretation, and integrated analysis within that field. In addition, the team runs commercial and open source-based software environments and establishes algorithmic solutions and pipelines for data processing and analysis.

Job description

In this job, you will apply your expertise in informatics and data science to ensure the reproducibility of the data analysis performed. An integral part of the work is integrating the data into our data management system and ensuring the reproducibility of the analysis. You will work closely with our proteomics and metabolomics mass spectrometry specialists and our data management team. In addition, you will be involved in tasks that aid in data interpretation and support bioinformatics projects. This may include working with data analysis and computational tools and assisting the collaborators from ETH and the University of Zurich in their research and projects related to mass spectrometry.

  • Knowledge of command line and UNIX tools.

Experience in the following areas will be considered an advantage:

  • Bioinformatics,
  • Data management and analysis of large-scale datasets, e.g., Slurm cluster and cloud computing,
  • R/Bioconductor,
  • Code repository usage, e.g., git, github, gitlab.
  • Experience with tools for reproducible data analysis, e.g., docker.

The ability to work independently is a prerequisite, as is the ability to effectively interact with the research and technical staff of the center and external research groups in a team-oriented manner. Advanced knowledge of English is essential, as this is the working language of the center.

We offer

A highly interesting position at the intersection of technology and life science research. Employment conditions are according to the regulations of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.
