Post-doctoral Researcher - Sea-City Interface Research Project (C3183)

ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities in the world with a strong focus on science and engineering. In 2010 it established the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) to do interdisciplinary research on pressing problems.

The centre currently runs several research programmes with the Future Cities Laboratory Global (FCL) as one of the programmes. It is home to a community of over 100 PhD, postdoctoral and Professorial researchers working on diverse themes related to sustainable cities and resilient infrastructure systems. In the course of their work, researchers actively collaborate with universities, research institutes, industry, and government agencies to offer practical solutions.

Project background

The Sea-City Interface research project forms part of the FCL Global research programme. The project focuses on mitigating climate impacts at the sea-city fringes in rapidly urbanizing cities in tropical Asia. Tropical coastal megacities are particularly vulnerable to extreme climates like heavy rainfall, hot weather, storm surges, and rising seas, and at the same time, they are also growing in size and population. In the future, as these climatic extremes are expected to increase worldwide due to climate change, such cities need new design ideas and science-informed adaptation plans, including the exploration of simple solutions.

The Sea-City Interface project specifically studies measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change, reduce climate change and urban-heat-island effects, and alleviate flooding, through improved approaches to urban design and planning, water-sensitive design, soil engineering, and environmental science. It also considers the interplay with an aging population, and emerging economic developments, to promote current and future liveability.

Job description

You will contribute your own research to the project relating to scenario development, simulation, analysis, and/or assessment to mitigate climate change on the sea-city fringes in rapidly urbanizing cities in tropical Asia, with a focus on Singapore.
