Post-doctoral position: Use of salivary oxytocin to explore positive welfare in pigs

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology. At the Institute of Agricultural Science, the Animal Physiology Group addresses complex regulation of physiology in livestock. Our basic research activities in animal welfare are based on a multi-disciplinary approach combining expertise in animal behaviour and physiology. They aim at finding ways to better assess and understand the needs of domestic and wild animals in order to improve their housing environment and management.

Project background

The project funded by the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation) aims at clarifying the role of salivary oxytocin as an indicator of positive emotional states in pigs and at exploring the possible role of social bonds on stress buffering using salivary oxytocin.

Job description

We will refine the kinetics of salivary oxytocin, characterise the extent to which salivary oxytocin reflects emotional states, and determine changes in salivary oxytocin during social buffering in relation to the presence of social bonds.
