Scientific Assistant/GIS-Geodesy

To strengthen the team in the soon-to-be-launched project "Mapping Ukraine", the Chair of Geosensors and Engineering Geodesy (GSEG) at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP), headed by Prof. Dr Andreas Wieser, is looking to hire a scientific assistant.

Project background

"Mapping Ukraine" is a cooperation project with the chairs of Geoinformation Engineering (Prof. M. Raubal) and Circular Engineering for Architecture (Prof. C. De Wolf) at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. It aims to create an independent platform for open and intuitive access to verified, comprehensive, geo-referenced information on the impact of war, terrorism or natural disasters on buildings, civil infrastructure and agricultural land. Images, 3D models, already publicly available data and voluntarily provided geographic information (VGI) of selected test sites, including one in Ukraine, will be automatically collected, verified, tagged, integrated and made available as Spatio-temporal evidence for use by professionals such as researchers, engineers and journalists, as well as by the public.

Job description

  • Collaboration in the research project "Mapping Ukraine" as a GIS specialist in an interdisciplinary and international team
  • Integration and visualisation of georeferenced data in a GIS (platform demonstrator with web map prototypes, probably based on ArcGIS)
  • Selection and integration of suitable existing tools, libraries and software packages
  • Conception, development and implementation of tools and user interface components for the platform demonstrator
  • Support in the selection and acquisition of georeferenced data for the platform demonstrator
  • Support of the professorship in research and teaching in the fields of engineering geodesy/surveying / terrestrial laser scanning, if a degree of employment >50% is desired.

Your profile

  • You have a Master's degree in GIS, geomatics, geodesy, computer science or a related discipline as well as experience in application, research or development in the field of GIS, web services and relational database systems.
  • You have good programming experience in Java, Python, C++ or another high-level language.
  • You have practical experience in front-end development and are proficient in the following technologies:
    • JavaScript (preferably knowledge of Dojo, JQuery, ArcGIS Libraries), HTML5, CSS3,
    • RESTful and other web services to exchange information over the web,
    • SQL, SQL server or PostgreSQL.
  • You have credentials that demonstrate your design skills for interactive map visualisations (e.g. filter, timeline, pop-up).
  • You can show that you have a strong grasp of cloud-based map configurators (especially based on ArcGIS such as ArcGIS Web AppBuilder, Experience Builder or Storymaps) to save time and resources.
  • As a front-end developer, you also have the necessary tools to develop special functions and applications via map APIs (especially ArcGIS-compatible libraries).
  • You are reliable, proactive, able to work both in a team and independently, and interested in research and teaching.
  • You have a very good command of German and/or English. Experience with geodetic practice, with the implementation of web applications and machine learning, is an advantage.

We offer

We offer employment for an initial period of 1 year in an international, interdisciplinary, highly motivated and collaborative working environment. The level of employment can be adapted to your needs. Subsequently, an extension to a maximum of 6 years is possible, with or without taking up doctoral studies, depending on your qualifications.
You will have access to the excellent infrastructure of ETH Zurich, the many contacts of the chair to other research institutions, the industry and authorities as well as to the extensive and modern equipment of the IGP. You will appreciate the opportunity to gain experience through exchanges with the Raubal and Wieser chairs, the opportunity to work on other projects on a selective basis, the high quality of life in the Zurich area, as well as ETH Zurich's offer of continuing education and development opportunities.
