The Biogeoscience Group within the Geological Institute, Department of Earth Sciences, is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to undertake research focused on development and utilization of nascent radiocarbon-centric databases for examination of carbon cycle processes at regional and global scales.
The research is part of a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) - funded project that is examining the fate of terrestrial organic carbon in river and ocean systems. Specific topics that will form the basis for investigations by the postdoctoral researcher include: (i) assessment of controls on the nature and residence times of terrestrial carbon exported from river basins, (ii) the influence of upstream supply and transport processes on the fate (i.e., dispersal, decomposition, preservation) of terrestrial carbon upon export to the ocean, and (iii) the global footprint of terrestrial organic carbon in ocean sediments. The project will involve mining and modelling of biogeochemical and ancillary data, and may also involve laboratory work. The Biogeoscience group is led by Prof. Timothy Eglinton supports laboratories that are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for molecular and isotopic organic geochemical analysis. The group maintains a database server and there is facile access to other computational resources at ETH.
Interested applicants should have a PhD degree in Ocean, Earth, Environmental or Geographic Sciences, ideally with experience in one or more of the following: geospatial analysis, geostatistical methods (e.g., GIS, machine learning), programming in R and/or Python, and database construction and utilization. Familiarity with organic geochemical, sedimentological and/or isotope biogeochemical data and methods is also very beneficial. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential, and a good level in German is useful. The ability to work independently, while contributing to a vibrant, collaborative, team environment is highly desirable. Interest in supervision of student projects is also a plus.
The 30-month position is available to start from 1 October 2020, but a later start date is also possible subject to negotiation. The salary is according to SNF guidelines.
We look forward to receiving your online application before the 1st September 2020. The application should include: a short CV, contact details of at least 3 references, and a motivation letter indicating how your background and interests match with the requirements for this position. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
More information about the Biogeoscience group can be found at www.biogeoscience.ethz.ch. For questions regarding the positions, please contact Prof. Timothy Eglinton at email@example.com (no applications).
