The Urban Energy Systems Laboratory develops models and concepts for decentralized energy system technologies based on renewable energy and innovative districts, including prototypes and demonstration plants. To strengthen our scientific team we are looking for a
You will assess state-of-the-art energy and building-technology systems in their capability to increase the flexibility in multi energy distribution grids and thus reduce the carbon content of the overall energy system. You will develop promising demand response theories or streams and assess their real life performance and applicability.
In that area, you will answer research questions around the use of measured and synthetic data with advanced data science techniques in the building / energy / mobility sector or (preferably) a combination of these (e.g. Peer2peer energy flow interpretation in the distribution grid); develop own and apply existing distributed control and demand response algorithms and translate them together with industry partners to products and real-life applications. The implementation on real hardware (http://ehub.empa.ch/) and benchmarking project-developments is part of that.
Initially you will participate in two projects (one approved SFOE project and one Innosuisse project-proposal under review) around information-constrained demand response implementations. You will collaborate with partner institutes to complement necessary competences; and work on the intersection of promising (own) prework and their application to meet use cases in industry. At a later stage, you will apply for project funds and network according to your research ideas, write project applications (in collaboration) and define scope and research ques-tions out of past projects and industry interests. You will supervise MSc students and Co-supervise PhD students.
We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated candidate with a PhD in energy-, control engineering, or comparable. Candidates should have profound and interdisciplinary knowledge in systems modelling, data science (i.e. learning algorithms) and experience with distributed control and/or demand response methods. A good research and publication record is essential. Additionally, experience with the development, acquisition and management of research projects is desirable. Candidates should have excellent written and spoken language skills in English (and ideally also German).
We are offering a multifaceted and challenging position for two years in a modern research environment with excellent infrastructure. Contract extensions are possible.
