The Technology, Innovation and Society (TIS) group at the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) at Eindhoven University of Technology is unique in combining questions on innovation and long-term transitions, and aspire to be a leading group in this field worldwide. We have a strong embedding in relevant social science and humanities disciplines such as innovation studies, economics of innovation, science- and technology studies, sustainability transition studies, and history of technology. We study sustainable innovation and transitions in a systemic, transdisciplinary, and transnational perspective.

We work on sustainability transitions and transformative governance in a variety of empirical fields. We address such transitions from socio-technical, global-local, and historical-contemporary perspectives. We mobilize a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, including socio-technical modelling. Being driven by the urgent need to address complex problems, we carry out transdisciplinary research as part of which we work closely with several TU/e engineering departments. We also actively collaborate with a variety of societal actors ranging from governments and companies to NGOs, citizens and user communities.

The TIS group is looking for an Assistant Professor on the economics of technological change. In this role you are expected to conduct research on sustainable innovation, technological change and socio-technical transitions. You will also contribute to teaching in our Sustainable Innovation bachelor, especially to the learning line ‘Economics of innovation’, a series of 4 courses, and to methodology courses, such as those on applied statistics.

  • Have a track record in the field of economics of technological change and have published in relevant journals in that field (e.g., Research Policy, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, and Environmental Innovation and Societal Transitions).
  • Knowledge of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR),  Energy Economics, and Sustainable Innovation is a plus.
  • Affinity with engineering sciences.
  • Ability to conduct high quality academic research, reflected in demonstratable outputs.
  • Develop an own research line that is well aligned with the research focus of the TIS group (for example sustainability or socio-technical transitions).
  • Willing to contribute to research projects as part of the TIS team.
  • Possess strong quantitative methodological skills such as advanced statistical analysis, agent-based modeling or social network analysis.
  • Ability to teach, demonstrated by experience or assistance in teaching. Informed vision on teaching and learning within your own discipline.
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills, including coaching and mentoring of students and staff, leading a project or chairing a group.
  • Excellent (written and verbal) proficiency in English.

Conditions of employment

A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university, in an interdisciplinary setting and within an international network. You will work on a beautiful, green campus within walking distance of the central train station. In addition, we offer you:
