Dean, School of Public Administration and Development Economics

Background

The DI is an independent and not-for-profit post-graduate academic institution

The DI offers 17 Masters Programs through the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, the School of Public Administration and Development Economics, the School of Psychology and Social Work and the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies.

The DI is seeking to appoint at the rank of full professor a Dean for the School of Public Administration and Development Economics. The School aims to offer students a high quality integrated education within a personalized learning environment that emphasizes intellectual challenge and public service relevance. The School offers four Masters Programs in Public Administration, Development Economics, Public Policy, and an Executive Masters in Public Administration and is in the process of launching a dual degree in Public and Business Administration. the school engages the local community through an active executive training center – The Executive Education Excellence Center – by offering professional development courses and workshops geared towards professionals primarily in the public sector. The School is in the process of preparing its relevant programs for the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) accreditation process.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Dean will report to the Provost, and is the chief academic and executive head for the School. The Dean is responsible for the leadership, operation and management of the School.

The Dean is expected to evaluate and advance the overall productivity of the School's teaching, research, and community service. He/she is expected to supervise the planning, development, and implementation process of all its academic programs, as well as the appointment, development and evaluation of a diverse faculty body and staff.

The Dean is also responsible for the overall quality of academic and research programs and is expected to develop initiatives in the School that will contribute to the Institute's strategic plan.

The Dean will collaborate as a member of the DI's senior leadership team and will also function as a member of the DI Council. The Dean will be expected to guide the School through the NASPAA accreditation process and support the DI through its International Quality Review (IQR) by the Quality Assurance Agency of Higher Education (QAA) in the UK.

Moreover, the Dean will conduct teaching and research in his/her relevant expertise. The post will be for a three-year period subject to probation and satisfactory performance reviews.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A Doctorate in Economics, Public administration, Public policy or a related field from an international institution.
  • Full Professorial rank with a strong and recent graduate teaching and research record in the field of the candidate’s specialization. 
  • Evidence of successful management abilities and strong leadership credentials at the Dean or Department Chair level.
  • Proven ability to lead a complex organization while articulating a clear vision and goals for the future; and, thoughtful organization and deployment of resources to achieve strategic ends.
  • Experience designing and implementing new academic programs and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and leverage relationships and partnerships with business, education, government and other constituencies at local, regional and international levels.
  • Full command of spoken and written Arabic and English.
  • Knowledge of relevant academic accreditation standards and preferably, experience with undergoing an accreditation process.
