Join us at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences to enable the transition to fossil-free and sustainable propulsion systems. Gothenburg and Chalmers are located in the center of the Swedish transport industry, which has an enormous drive towards decarbonization. Our Division of Energy Conversion and Propulsion Systems contributes to this with both applied and fundamental research and education. Your expertise, research and education efforts will contribute to our team effort to cover all aspects of the transition away from fossil fuels.

Information about the department and the research
We perform research and provide education related to four research directions: Electrification, Internal Combustion Engines, Fuel Cell Systems and Air Quality. Our goal is to enable sustainable transport without harmful emissions.
We work both with simulation and experiments. For our experimental work, we have a large laboratory for sustainable transport solutions (LaSTS) including engine rigs, a complete vehicle rig and a brake wear emissions rig. We also do experiments on-road and at-road (real world emissions). We are currently expanding the research within Air Quality (emissions control and impact assessment) including emissions formation, transformation, reduction and transportation. We collaborate with many other research groups regarding e.g. impact assessment (environmental impact and human health impact).
Major responsibilities
You will be responsible for leading and initiating research in the field of air pollution/air quality, but will still be connected to the research on energy conversion and propulsion systems.
Since the division performs experimental research, you are expected to contribute with excellence in experimental techniques that links to the societal impact (environment and health issues).
Most of the work we do is focused on road transport, but other modes of transport and research related to our capabilities are also part of our portfolio. You will be able to develop yourself and your research area in line with our strategy and complement our team efforts to cover the propulsion system transition to a fossil-free future of the transport sector.
In time you are expected to lead and develop a research team based on externally funded projects. It will be your responsibility to initiate these projects and secure the related funds for these. As an associate professor, you will also coordinate, develop, examine and lecture in courses related to your research or fundamental engineering.
Contract terms
Full-time permanent employment.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you:
- Have a PhD degree (or higher) in a relevant field.
- Have experience in propulsion system-related research and supervision.
- Enjoy working in a team and have experience in managing projects.
It is important that you take initiatives to create and execute your own projects but also to help your colleagues and students to succeed.
- Need to have documented experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and graduate students. The typical percentage of the pedagogical tasks is up to 20% of your total working time. Therefore, we place a great deal of emphasis on your pedagogical portfolio.
Teaching faculty at Chalmers are required to have completed courses in higher education pedagogics in accordance with SUHF’s recommendations (REK 2016:1) or equivalent education for a total of at least 10 weeks of full-time study (see link to instructions for compiling your application below for more information on SUHF recommendations). External applicants who currently do not meet the SUHF requirements may be employed for a permanent position under the condition that the required education is completed within the first two years of employment.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to acquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
For a complete description of the qualifications and responsibilities level for the position of Associate professor, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty, section 6.3.
