ABSTRACT

The conversion of biomass, and more generally bio-resources, into energy can be achieved after a gasification step. Some of the technologies envisaged to carry out this operation use powder burners, similar to those already used for coal gasification. in such equipment, The bio resource must then be injected as a fine powder, with particle size of a few hundred microns. Due to the fibrous shape and the low density of this type of material, these powders are cohesive and the fine particles tend to agglomerate together. These agglomeration phenomena cause blockages and shutdowns of industrial installations, which constitutes so far a major hurdle to overcome for the development of this type of process.The proposed thesis aims to continue the work carried out in a first thesis ending in 2018. The objective is to further improve the knowledge about the specific behavior of this kind of powder, leading to a quantitative and predictive description, with the support of simulation tools. The results will also lead to an optimisation of the preparation steps (thermal and mechanical preparation). The thesis will have an experimental part, with measurements in the laboratory as well as studies with pilot scale devices, representative of the different steps of an industrial process (storage, conveying, injection and gasification). The work will also intuit a numerical simulation part dedicated to the description of the behavior of these granular media. This work will be carried out with the installations (pilots and models) and the analysis equipment of both CEA Grenoble and the Ecole des Mines at Albi.
