This position will report directly to the Director of Student Services.

Summary of Position:

The Department of Student Services is seeking professional full-time Academic Writing Tutors to guide learning improvement for undergraduate (UG) students in English and communications-related course assignments.  Academic Writing Tutors promote academic success in the English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL) university environment. Academic Writing Tutors supplement UG student-abilities and the UG course instruction by providing additional development of academic English facility in writing and communications skills.

Responsibilities and Duties: 

  • Support and assist students with their writing process providing guidance, information, and resources to promote extended learning and academic success.
  • Provide active learning dialogue with students to guide UG English and writing competency in the EFL environment. 
  • Provide instruction and practice exercises in appropriate modes and styles of documentation and researched source-citation.
  • Provide supplemental English/writing instruction to students individually or in a group setting, helping students apply appropriate learning and study skills to master course content.
  • Coordinate with instructors and faculty members across the university learning environment to ensure that tutoring services are target in relation to offered course content.
  • Coordinate with academic advisors and instructors/faculty members to identify students requiring additional writing assistance and provide academic writing tutoring support as needed.
  • Strictly maintain the confidentiality, privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information.
  • Provide and promote service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required: 

A Master’s degree in English and/or a writing intensive field is required, along with experience working in UG classrooms or tutoring centers that are EFL learning environment.  Academic Writing Tutors must be advanced in skill with essay writing, critical reading and thinking, college composition and writing across the curriculum environments. Teaching and/or tutoring experience is preferred and training in EFL approaches is necessary.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

This position requires a self-motivated team player with the ability to deliver a knowledgeable level of interactive dialogue; develop and maintain collaborative relationships inside and outside of the writing center and college classrooms; proactively identify and solve problems in a team-based environment; prioritize effectively and manage multiple student-assessments simultaneously with a high level of accuracy. Academic Writing Tutors must possess strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills accompanied by exceptional organizational skills and proficient computer skills, including familiarity with the Microsoft Suite of Office Applications, as well as other computer applications and LMS platforms.  The successful candidates must have a strong work ethic, as well as a passion for helping students, a commitment to service excellence, and student success.  The Academic Writing Tutors must be able to work well with staff at all levels within a diverse, international, multi-cultural, collaborative environment.
