This position will report directly to the Assistant Director of Student Life.

Summary Of Position:

This is a new position in a start-up university setting; in coordination with the Director of Student Life, the Academic Advising & Retention Coordinator will develop and oversee the Academic Advising & Retention unit. As a new unit, the coordinator will be involved in recruitment, writing policies and internal operational procedures, identifying unit goals and strategies, overseeing staff functions and other related duties. The coordinator provides leadership for the coordination and delivery of advising processes; works collaboratively with Deans and senior administrators to contribute to strategic initiatives that support retention efforts and promote student academic success. The coordinator will also be part of the wider Student Life department and is required to assist with the coordination, planning and executing of other various student engagement activities. 


  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of advising interventions with the goal of assisting students in making timely progress toward degree completion.
  • Lead the Academic Advising team in assisting students in selecting course work appropriate to their skill levels and career and academic goals.
  • Lead the Academic Advising team in assisting students with creating educational plans outlining the academic requirements for them to meet their goals.
  • Take responsibility for assessing the effectiveness of the student advising services and work toward improving the effectiveness of the office and its programs.
  • Create and update advising manuals and make them available to all advisors.
  • Develop key competencies for staff, monitor staff performance, and provide feedback and training for staff development within the unit.
  • Take responsibility for, and represent, student academic advising services during planning of university’s orientation programs.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees and teams for the purpose of supporting and enhancing student success.
  • Collaborate with the Registrar and other academic departments to project enrollments for the planning of course schedules.
  • Lead the Academic Advising team in maintaining contact and developing academic success planning with at-risk students throughout each semester.
  • Assist in developing strategies which address student retention issues.
  • Create and manage databases and spreadsheets that support the operations of academic advising as well as generate necessary reports.
  • Coordinate, manage and facilitate workshops, seminars and other events that further promote and support academic advising and student success.
  • Support Student Affairs staff in initiating and planning university wide activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by supervisor

Experience And Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, counselling, leadership, education, or any other related discipline (Master’s Degree preferred)
  • At least three years of leadership experience in Student Advising 
  • International work experience preferred. Middle East region work experience considered an advantage 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (knowledge of Arabic considered an advantage)
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Power Point, Excel) and database applications.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of service mindset and delivering results
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and a “can-do” mindset
  • Manage complex and highly sensitive materials and help to foster a culture of confidentiality
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to excel in a demanding, outcome-oriented, and dynamic environment with little supervision

Candidates are required to demonstrate a strong knowledge of student success and retention strategies in a post‐secondary environment. The ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty and staff while being able to work independently under minimal supervision is essential. Candidates must also be able to manage a complex set of priorities utilizing effective organizational and time management skills. This position requires a strong collaborator who is highly motivated and enthusiastic about post‐secondary student success and improving the overall student experience. Excellent problem-solving abilities in addition to strong written and oral communication skills and a proven comfort level with public speaking is critical to the success of this role.
