This 24-months’ post-doctoral fellow is funded by the new Mediterranean Institute for Environmental Transition (A*Midex), an interdisciplinary initiative aiming to tackle the challenges of the ongoing climate nexus, and will begin at the latest on December 2023
Description of the position:
The incumbent will work as part of an interdisciplinary research team whose objective is to characterize the biodiversity and ecology of viruses infecting marine microbial eukaryotes and to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of infection. Drawing on her/his own expertise and that of other participating researchers, she/he will lead a project that combines FISH, FACS, and minimagenomic approaches to isolate and characterize viruses infecting regional strains of the unicellular green alga Picochlorum, as well as of other marine protists.
A significant experience in the use of the Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) approach is mandatory for this position.
The working language is English. Skills in French are not essential but useful.
The position requires a validated PhD, in a relevant field, at the time of recruitment. Hiring date expected between June and December 2023 (applications from PhD students who will defend their thesis before end of 2023 are encouraged).
The work location is at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO, www.mio.osupytheas.fr) of Aix-Marseille University (AMU, France).
Located in the suburbs of the city of Marseille (https://goo.gl/maps/L2FNTLeKBJL2), the MIO is a centre for marine research with approximately 250 researchers, faculty, staff and students working on research programs addressing many aspects of ocean sciences. The MIO is a centre of expertise in marine biology, ecology, biodiversity, microbiology, halieutic, physics, chemistry, biogeochemistry and sedimentology.

QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED EDUCATION LEVEL, PROFESSIONAL SKILLS, RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS
The position requires a validated PhD, in a relevant field, at the time of recruitment.

Additional experience in the following fields is welcome but not mandatory (training available in the lab.):
1) Fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS) by flow cytometry
2) Metagenomic analysis/bioinformatics
3) Microalga lab culture and molecular biology
