As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.
Our Research Group Hybrid Electric Aircraft Tehnologies part of the Center for Transport Technologies is looking for new Ingenious Partner for our location in Vienna. Our focus lies on the delivery of Hybrid Electric Aircraft, that presents significant technological challenges in achieving carbon neutrality in air transport, as outlined by the European Green Deal. We are exploring new technologies, solutions, and methodologies to ensure the safe operation of aircraft in icing conditions and to design and develop hydrogen fuel systems for airliners.
As a member of our growing team, you will perform research and be involved in the execution of ambitious and large-scale European research projects funded by the Horizon Europe and Clean Aviation programmes.
Scientist (m/f/d) for numerical modeling and simulation of in-flight icing and/or hydrogen fuel systems for aircrafts
CENTER FOR TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIES
You will investigate and simulate the in-flight icing characteristics of current and upcoming aircraft configurations, develop new methodologies, improve numerical models for these simulations, and design new ice protection solutions.
Additionally, depending on your background, you may also perform research on the numerical simulation and design of hydrogen fuel systems for future aircraft.
You will interface with experienced scientists and engineers in the field of aerospace across Europe.
You work in direct contact with European Institutions and international partners from research and industry on multi-annual large-scale collaborative projects.
You will build your own network and contribute to the definition of our strategic research direction, preparing proposals for new projects with support from your colleagues – Together, we bring ideas to life.
You will publish your results in high-ranking journals and will support other scientists in doing so.
You will supervise PhD and Master students.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
Master or (preferably) Ph.D. level qualification in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics (or related disciplines) with a focus on aerodynamics and multiphase flow numerical modeling.
Proven experience (6+ years after the M.Sc. or 3+ years after the Ph.D.) in at least one of the three following thematic areas (plus proven interest and willingness to learn the other two): (i) aircraft design, (ii) in-flight icing, (iii) aircraft hydrogen fuel systems. Relevant sub-areas are (for example): airframe design, aircraft aerodynamics, multiphase flow simulation, numerical modelling, experimental testing, hydrogen storage and conversion systems. The candidate is expected to describe in his/her Cover Letter how his/her profile matches at least one of the three areas above. Should the candidate have a proven experience below the years indicated above and be successful in the selection process he/she may be re-classified as Junior Scientist (m/f/d).
Programming skills in Python, MATLAB (including Simulink), C/C++ or similar languages. Expertise with state-of-the-art industrial design and computational tools (e.g., ANSYS/Modelica/Dymola) are also well regarded.
Experience in laboratory, wind tunnel and/or flight testing is a plus.
Experience in working in industrial projects in aerospace (e.g., commissioned by Airbus or Leonardo) and/or European projects (e.g. Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, Clean Aviation) is an asset.
High level of motivation to develop a scientific/research career. Self-motivation and personal drive are essential.
Excellent communication skills in English, including proficiency in technical writing, is mandatory. German is desirable.
What to expect:
The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis (38,5 h / week) according to the collective agreement is EUR 57.890,--. The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience. In addition, we offer company benefits, flexible working conditions, individual training and career opportunities.
Starting date is expected in Q1/Q2-2025 (flexible). Applications will be accepted until November 30th, 2024, at 12:00 (CET). Early-bird applications are welcome since the selection process can start at an earlier stage.
At AIT diversity and inclusion are of great importance. This is why we strive to inspire women to join our teams in the field of technology. We welcome applications from women, who will be given preference in case of equal qualifications after taking into account all relevant facts and circumstances of all applications.
